The Pros and Cons of Dating Apps
Have you ever used a dating app? Are you considering using one for the first time? Maybe you've used them before without any success, and you're wondering if it's worth it to try again. Online dating comes with a number of advantages and disadvantages. Here are some of the pros and cons of using a dating app:
Pro: It might be easier to strike up an interesting conversation
One of the positive advantages of using dating apps is that they allow you to get the small talk and the boring details out of the way quickly. By the time that you meet up, you'll already know the person's age and sexuality (as long as they're honest) as well as the other details that they have listed on the "about me" section of their profile.
Let's say that you meet someone on a dating app, and their "about me" section states that they love astrology, poetry, and volunteering at their local animal shelter. This is great because that way, a conversation starter is right there in front of your face. You can ask them questions about things that they're passionate about because you already know what they are.
Con: There's extra room for deceit
In 2020, we have a lot more literacy when it comes to online dating than we did 10 years ago. We know the safety precautions to take: face-timing or Skyping someone before your first in-person date, for example, to make sure that people are who they say they are.
Many apps allow (or even require) you to verify your identity when you sign up. Overall, it's a lot easier to avoid a full-on “catfish” experience these days, but with that said, there is still extra room for deceit. There's always the chance that someone will use another person's pictures or lie about their current relationship status, so be alert and exercise caution when preparing to meet up.
Pro: You don't have to go bar-hopping to get out there
If you're shy or have more of an introverted personality, dating apps give you a unique chance to meet new love interests without even leaving your house. You don't have to try to find romance at a sleazy bar or nightclub anymore, and you also don't have to wait for your friends to set you up.
You can connect with people by talking about real topics online before you meet up for your first date. Getting to know someone a little bit first might help you out if you're the shy type and you struggle to introduce yourself to new people. That way, once you are face-to-face, you'll have a sense of what they're all about.
Con: Your perfect match might be far away
Say that you meet an incredible person; your conversation is effortless, they radiate positive energy, you find each other attractive, and you've been talking non-stop every day. The only problem? They're miles and miles away.
In the worst-case scenario, they might live across the country or in a different country entirely! Depending on how you look at it, this could actually be a positive or negative attribute. On one hand, without the world of online dating, you wouldn't have met this person.
On the other hand, it's painful to live so far away from someone that you're into. The good news is that just like technology allows us to engage innately and meet new people through the glory of electronics, it also makes long distance relationships a lot easier. You never know; if what you've got going on is solid enough, it might not be a long-distance situation for long.
Pro: It's easier to meet people like you
These days, there are so many different options to choose from when it comes to dating apps. This is excellent because it means that there are specialized dating apps that allow you to meet people like you.
For example, if you have an LGBTQIA identity, there are apps made specifically for people who identify as gay, lesbian, and so on. In this scenario, it's highly advantageous that you won't have to do the work of scoping people out in real life to try to figure out if they're gay or not; you'll already know.
Con: You might overlook the right person
Have you ever accidentally swiped past a person's profile? That's one of the ways to miss your match on a dating app, but it's also important to realize that people are often different in person than they are in real life.
There's a chance that you'll overlook someone on a dating app that you'd have impeccable chemistry with in real life. It's one thing to have standards when you're reading through a person's profile, but try not to be too picky; you might be missing out on something great.
The Bottom Line:
All in all, dating apps provide a unique way to meet new people that you might not come into your life otherwise. It is possible to establish a real, valuable connection online, so don't write it off. Be safe and put your authentic self out there; you never know what will happen!
